What does a brand consultant do? Services, cost and when to hire one

A brand consultant helps a business decide who it is for, what it stands for and how it should look and sound, then makes sure that thinking reaches every touchpoint. Here is what they do, what they cost and when to hire one.

A brand consultant helps a business decide who it serves, why people should choose it and how it should look and sound, then turns those decisions into a clear plan the whole team can use. The work usually covers a brand audit, positioning, messaging, the brief or design of the visual identity and the rules that keep the brand consistent. In 2026 most independent brand consultants charge about $75 to $300 per hour, and a defined strategy project usually costs from about $2,000 to $10,000 or more.

I am Jakaria Mahmud, a senior brand identity designer and brand consultant working with founders in the USA, UK, Europe and Australia. My work covers both strategy and design, so this guide explains both sides: what the advice part looks like and where it meets the logo, identity and guidelines.

Short answer. A brand consultant diagnoses what is holding a brand back and sets the direction: audience, positioning, message, personality and identity rules. A brand designer makes that direction visible. Hire a consultant when the problem is unclear direction, not only an old logo.

What a brand consultant actually does

The job changes with the client, but most engagements include some or all of these:

  • Brand audit: a review of how the brand looks, sounds and performs today across the website, sales decks, social, packaging and reviews. See the brand audit checklist.
  • Market and competitor review: where competitors sit, what they all say and where the open space is.
  • Audience definition: who the best customers are, what they care about and what makes them buy.
  • Positioning: one clear statement of who the brand is for, what it offers and why it is different. See how to write a brand positioning statement.
  • Messaging and tone of voice: the core message, proof points and how the brand should sound.
  • Brand personality and archetype: a shared language for how the brand behaves. See brand archetypes.
  • Identity direction: a design brief, or the identity itself when the consultant is also a designer: logo, colour, typography and imagery.
  • Guidelines and rollout: the rules and templates that keep the brand consistent once the project ends. See the brand guidelines checklist.

Brand consultant vs brand strategist vs brand designer vs agency

The titles overlap and many people hold more than one. This is the practical difference:

How much does a brand consultant cost in 2026?

Rates depend on experience, scope and market. These ranges come from 2026 data published by Fiverr and Payscale (sources at the end). Treat them as a guide, not a quote.

ExperienceHourly rate (USD)Typical project (USD)
1 to 3 years$40 to $75$300 to $800
4 to 7 years$75 to $150$800 to $2,000
8+ years$150 to $300$2,000 to $5,000+

Payscale puts the average US brand consultant at about $100 per hour, with most between $48 and $160. Typical fixed prices by type of work:

WorkTypical timeTypical price (USD)
Consultation session1 to 2 hours$49 to $300
Brand audit5 to 10 hours$200 to $750
Messaging framework15 to 25 hours$750 to $1,500
Full brand strategy40+ hours$2,000 to $5,000+
Major rebrand for an established companySeveral weeks$3,000 to $10,000+

Large agencies charge well above these ranges because their price includes a bigger team and research budget. For full identity pricing by market, see brand identity design cost in the USA, branding cost in the UK and branding cost in Australia.

My own pricing is public: the Launch plan is $799 one time for a logo, brand starter kit and one landing page, and full brand strategy, identity and guidelines sit in the Partner plan at $1,999 per month.

When to hire a brand consultant

  • You are launching and want to get positioning right before you pay for design.
  • You have outgrown the brand: it looked fine at seed stage but now feels small next to the clients you want.
  • Sales keep explaining the company differently and the website, deck and social do not agree.
  • You are entering a new market such as the USA, UK, Australia or Norway.
  • You are planning a rebrand or a merger and need to decide what to keep. See the rebranding guide.
  • Prices are under pressure because buyers cannot see why you are different. See how branding increases sales.

You probably do not need a consultant if you are testing an idea with almost no budget. A clean logo and a simple one page site is enough for that stage. See how much a logo costs.

What a brand consulting project looks like

  1. Discovery (week 1): a kickoff call, a short questionnaire and access to your current materials.
  2. Audit and research (week 1 to 2): review of the brand, competitors and, where possible, customer conversations.
  3. Strategy (week 2): positioning, audience, message and personality, presented and agreed before any design.
  4. Identity (week 3 to 4): logo, colour, type and key applications built from the strategy.
  5. Guidelines and handover (week 4 to 5): brand guidelines, templates and source files.

The full design timeline is explained in how long brand identity design takes, and the step by step method in the brand identity design process.

What you should get at the end

  • A short strategy document you can share with your team, investors and future hires.
  • A positioning statement and core message in plain language.
  • Tone of voice notes with examples of what to say and what to avoid.
  • Either a clear identity brief or the finished identity, depending on the scope.
  • Guidelines and the source files, owned by you.

How to choose a good brand consultant

  • Look for case studies that show the problem, the thinking and the result, not only final images.
  • Ask how strategy turns into design. Advice that never reaches the website or the deck rarely changes anything.
  • Ask for a fixed scope and price in writing, with the number of workshops, rounds and deliverables.
  • Check reviews and public profiles that confirm the work is theirs.
  • Choose someone who asks hard questions about your business before showing any visuals.

The full checklist, including 12 questions and red flags, is in how to hire a brand identity designer.

Working with a remote brand consultant

Most brand consulting now happens remotely: video workshops, a shared board and written decisions after each stage. I work this way with clients in the USA, the UK, Australia and Norway. Agree call times early, keep one decision maker and put every decision in writing.

The takeaway

A brand consultant is worth hiring when the real problem is direction: who you are for, why you are different and how to show it. Good consulting ends in something you can use, a clear position, a message the whole team repeats and an identity built on both. Pay for a defined scope, insist on ownership of everything delivered and make sure the strategy reaches your website, deck and product.

Frequently asked questions

A brand consultant reviews how a brand looks, sounds and performs, then sets its direction: target audience, positioning, messaging, personality and identity rules. Many also design or brief the visual identity and guidelines so the strategy reaches every touchpoint.

In 2026 independent brand consultants usually charge about $75 to $300 per hour depending on experience. Payscale puts the US average at about $100 per hour. A brand audit often costs $200 to $750, a full brand strategy $2,000 to $5,000 or more and a major rebrand $3,000 to $10,000 or more.

A brand consultant focuses on direction: audience, positioning and message. A brand designer turns that direction into a visual identity such as the logo, colour, typography and guidelines. Some senior designers do both.

They overlap. A brand strategist usually focuses on research and positioning, while a brand consultant covers the whole brand, from audit and strategy to identity direction and rollout.

Hire one when you are launching, have outgrown your brand, are entering a new market, are planning a rebrand, or when sales, website and marketing describe the company in different ways.

A focused strategy takes about one to two weeks. Strategy plus a full identity and guidelines usually takes four to five weeks with one decision maker and quick feedback.
