Ask five designers in the United States to quote a new brand and you can get five answers between $500 and $75,000. The gap is not random. It comes from how much strategy is included, how many things get designed, who does the work and what you actually receive at the end. This guide breaks it down so you can budget with confidence.
I am Jakaria Mahmud, a brand identity designer working with founders across the USA. I also run sales and business development for a US based studio, so I see how brand projects are scoped and priced from both sides of the table. Below you will find typical 2026 price ranges, what each level includes, the hidden costs nobody mentions and a simple way to pick the right option for your stage.
Short answer. In the USA in 2026, a logo from an entry level freelancer costs about $300 to $1,500, a full identity from an experienced freelancer about $2,000 to $10,000, a boutique studio about $10,000 to $30,000 and a mid size agency $30,000 to $75,000 or more. Startups usually get the best value from a senior independent designer with a fixed scope that includes positioning, a logo system, an identity system and brand guidelines.
Brand identity design cost in the USA by provider
These ranges come from published 2026 pricing guides by US design businesses (sources at the end). Treat them as a map, not a quote.
| Provider | Typical cost | What you usually get | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry level freelancer | $300 to $1,500 | A logo and a basic colour palette | Side projects and very early tests |
| Experienced freelancer | $2,000 to $10,000 | Logo suite, colour, typography and brand guidelines | Seed stage startups and growing small businesses |
| Boutique studio | $10,000 to $30,000 | Full identity system, strategy and templates | Funded startups and established companies |
| Mid size agency | $30,000 to $75,000+ | Research, messaging, brand architecture and full identity | Scale ups and multi product companies |
| National agency rebrand | $80,000 to $300,000+ | Enterprise research, naming, rollout across every channel | Large companies with many markets |
Hourly rates follow the same pattern. Published 2026 figures put US brand identity designers at roughly $30 to $55 an hour at junior level, $55 to $100 at mid level and $100 to $175 at senior level, with top specialists charging more.
What drives the price of a brand identity
- Strategy. A project that starts with positioning, audience and messaging costs more than one that starts with sketches, and it is usually worth it. Strategy is what makes the design sell.
- Scope of applications. A logo alone is one thing. A logo plus website, pitch deck, packaging, signage and social templates is a much bigger job.
- Seniority. You pay more per hour for a senior designer but often less overall, because the right direction comes faster and needs fewer rounds.
- Team size. Agencies add strategists, account managers and project managers. That adds coordination, and cost.
- Research. Customer interviews, competitor audits and testing add weeks and budget.
- Rights and files. Full ownership, editable source files and complete guidelines should be included. Some cheap offers hold them back.
What a complete brand identity should include
Whatever you pay, check that the quote covers the pieces you will actually use:
- Positioning and messaging: who you serve, why you win and a one line description of what you do.
- Logo system: a primary logo, a compact mark or icon and versions for dark and light backgrounds. See my logo design service for what a full logo system looks like.
- Visual identity: colour palette, typography, imagery style and layout rules.
- Brand guidelines: a clear guide your team and future designers can follow. Read more on brand guidelines design.
- Key applications: the things you need first, such as a website direction, a pitch deck, social templates or business cards.
- Files and ownership: SVG, PDF and PNG files, the editable source and full rights in writing.
What to budget by company stage
Pre seed and side projects
Keep it lean. A clear name, a simple logo system, two fonts, a small palette and one good landing page. Spend on clarity, not decoration. Budget from under $1,000 up to about $3,000.
Seed and early revenue
This is when a real identity pays off. Investors, early customers and new hires judge you on the deck, the site and the product together. A senior independent designer with positioning, a full identity and guidelines is usually the best value. Budget roughly $2,000 to $10,000.
Series A and beyond
You now need a brand that scales across product, marketing, sales and hiring. Expect deeper research, a larger system and design support after launch. Budget from about $10,000 upward, or an ongoing design partner on a monthly plan.
Local and service businesses
Contractors, clinics, restaurants and professional firms need a bold, legible logo that works on signs, vehicles and a Google Business Profile, plus consistent templates. A focused scope in the $1,500 to $8,000 range covers most needs.
Hidden costs most quotes leave out
- Trademark search and filing. A USPTO filing and an attorney review are separate from design. Check the name before you fall in love with a logo.
- Font licences. Some commercial typefaces need paid licences for web, app or wide use.
- Photography and illustration. Custom imagery is often quoted separately.
- Extra revision rounds. Know how many rounds are included and what happens after.
- Rollout. Updating the website, product UI, signage and printed material takes time and money after the identity is approved.
- Missing files. If you do not receive editable source files, every future change costs you another invoice.
Fixed price, hourly or monthly: which is better?
Fixed price works best for a clearly defined identity project. You know the cost up front and the designer carries the risk of overruns. Hourly suits small changes and open ended work but makes budgets hard to predict. Monthly plans fit companies that need brand, website and product design continuously. Most startups should use a fixed price for the identity, then a monthly plan if they need ongoing design.
How to get a strong brand without overpaying
- Write a one page brief: audience, competitors, goals, must haves and budget.
- Ask for positioning before design, even a short version.
- Limit the first scope to what you will use in the next six months.
- Ask for a logo system and guidelines, not just a logo.
- Confirm ownership and source files in writing.
- Choose one accountable senior person over a large team you will never meet.
Red flags when comparing quotes
- Twenty logo concepts for $99. Quantity replaces thinking.
- No questions about your customers or competitors.
- No written scope, timeline or revision policy.
- Files or rights held back until an extra payment.
- A portfolio that all looks the same, whatever the client.
How long a brand identity project takes
A focused logo and starter kit can take about one week. A full identity with guidelines usually takes three to six weeks for an independent designer or studio, and two to four months or more at larger agencies because of research and approvals. Fast feedback from your side is the biggest factor you control.

A logo is one mark. A brand identity is the whole system: positioning, logo versions, colour, typography, imagery, layout rules and guidelines that keep every touchpoint consistent.
Usually yes, because there is less overhead. A senior freelancer can deliver the same core identity as a boutique studio for a fraction of the cost, while agencies make sense for large research heavy rebrands.
They should be for any full identity project. Always check the quote for guidelines, editable source files and full ownership.
