How much does branding cost in the UK? A 2026 price guide for UK businesses

Cover: How much does branding cost in the UK? A 2026 price guide for UK businesses

Ask three UK designers to quote for a new brand and you might hear £800, £8,000 and £40,000. All three can be fair. The difference comes from how much strategy is included, who does the work, how many things get designed and what you actually own at the end. This guide breaks UK branding prices down so you can set a sensible budget and compare quotes with confidence.

I am Jakaria Mahmud, a brand identity designer working with founders and teams across the UK, from London and Manchester to Bristol and Edinburgh. Below you will find typical 2026 prices in pounds, what each level includes, the extra costs most quotes leave out, how VAT and trade marks work and how to choose the right option for your stage.

Short answer. In the UK in 2026, a logo typically costs £500 to £5,000. A full brand identity costs roughly £500 to £5,000 with a freelancer, £1,500 to £15,000 with a small studio, £5,000 to £30,000 with a mid sized agency and £30,000 to £50,000 or more with a large or specialist agency. Budget separately for a UK trade mark (£205 for one class online since April 2026), font licences and rollout. Most startups and SMEs get the best value from a senior designer with a fixed scope covering positioning, logo, identity and brand guidelines.

Branding prices in the UK by provider

These ranges are drawn from 2026 pricing guides published by UK agencies (sources at the end). Published guides overlap and disagree at the edges, so treat them as a map rather than a quote.

ProviderTypical UK priceWhat you usually getBest for
Logo only£500 to £5,000A logo and a few file formatsVery early tests and side projects
Freelance designer£500 to £5,000Logo, colours, typography and a short guideSole traders and new small businesses
Small studio£1,500 to £15,000Identity system, templates and guidelinesStartups and growing SMEs
Mid sized agency£5,000 to £30,000Strategy, identity, guidelines, often a websiteFunded startups and established firms
Large or specialist agency£30,000 to £50,000+Research, naming, brand architecture and full rolloutLarge organisations and complex rebrands

London agencies tend to sit at the upper end of each range, mostly because of higher salaries and studio costs, not because the work itself is different.

What drives the cost of branding in the UK

  • Strategy. Positioning, audience and messaging work adds cost, and it is what makes the design sell. Projects that skip it are cheaper and usually weaker.
  • Scope. A logo is one deliverable. A logo plus website, pitch deck, signage, vehicle livery and social templates is a much bigger job.
  • Seniority. Senior designers charge more per day but usually reach the right answer in fewer rounds.
  • Team and overheads. Agencies add account managers, strategists and project managers, plus office costs, especially in London.
  • Research. Customer interviews, competitor audits and workshops add time and budget.
  • Ownership. Full rights, editable source files and complete guidelines should be part of the price. Some cheap offers keep them back.

What a complete UK brand identity should include

  1. Positioning and messaging written in plain English: who you serve, why you win and a one line description of what you do.
  2. Logo system: primary logo, compact mark or icon, and versions for light, dark and one colour use. See my logo design service.
  3. Visual identity: colour palette, typography, imagery style and layout rules.
  4. Brand guidelines your team, agencies and printers can follow. More on brand guidelines design.
  5. Key applications: the assets you need first, such as a website direction, proposal or tender templates, a pitch deck or social templates.
  6. Files and ownership: SVG, PDF and PNG files, editable source files and full rights in writing.

What to budget by business stage

Sole traders and new small businesses

Start with a clear name, a simple logo system, two typefaces, a small palette and one good landing page. Around £500 to £3,000 covers most needs.

Startups and growing SMEs

This is when a proper identity pays for itself: investors, customers and new hires judge the deck, site and product together. A senior designer or small studio with positioning, identity and guidelines usually gives the best value, roughly £2,000 to £15,000.

Established firms and scale ups

Expect deeper research, a larger system and help rolling it out across teams and offices. Budgets usually start around £15,000 and rise with complexity.

Trades, construction and local services

A bold, legible logo for vans, hoardings, PPE and a Google Business Profile matters more than a big strategy deck. A focused scope of about £1,500 to £8,000 covers most firms.

Costs most UK branding quotes leave out

  • UK trade mark. Since 1 April 2026 the UK Intellectual Property Office charges £205 to file online in one class and £60 for each extra class. A solicitor or trade mark attorney search and filing costs more on top.
  • Font licences. Commercial typefaces can need paid licences for web, app or wide use.
  • Photography and illustration. Custom imagery is often quoted separately.
  • Printing and signage. Shopfronts, vehicles, uniforms and stationery are production costs, not design costs.
  • Website. Many branding quotes cover website direction only, not a built site.
  • Extra revision rounds. Check how many rounds are included and what happens after.

Do UK branding prices include VAT?

Many UK agencies quote excluding VAT, so a £10,000 quote from a VAT registered UK supplier becomes £12,000 at the standard 20% rate. If you work with a designer outside the UK, UK VAT is usually not added to the invoice; a VAT registered UK business normally accounts for it under the reverse charge. VAT rules depend on your situation, so check with your accountant before you compare quotes.

Freelancer, agency or overseas designer?

  • Freelancer: lowest cost and direct contact with the person doing the work. Quality varies widely, so judge the portfolio and process, not the price.
  • UK agency: a full team, more strategy and more capacity, at a higher price, often with layers between you and the designer.
  • Senior overseas designer: agency level thinking at freelance prices, as long as the process is clear. With the right time zone, UK feedback can come back the same working day.

Red flags when comparing UK branding quotes

  • Dozens of logo concepts for a tiny fee.
  • No questions about your customers, competitors or goals.
  • No written scope, timeline or revision policy.
  • Source files or rights held back unless you pay more.
  • A portfolio where every brand looks the same.

How long branding takes in the UK

A logo and starter kit can take about a week. A full identity with guidelines usually takes three to six weeks with a senior designer or small studio, and two to four months or more with larger agencies because of research and sign off. Quick, clear feedback from one decision maker is the biggest thing you control.

The takeaway

Branding in the UK can cost anything from a few hundred pounds to fifty thousand and more. The right budget depends on your stage, how much strategy you need and what you will actually use in the next year. Pay for clear positioning, a complete system and full ownership, plan for VAT and a trade mark, and your brand will keep working long after launch.
