Packaging design cost in 2027: what you will pay, what you get and how to plan it

A single label can cost a few hundred dollars and a full packaging system can cost tens of thousands. Here is what packaging design costs in 2027, what drives the price and how to get the most from your budget.

Packaging design cost depends on three things: how many products you have, whether you need new box structures or only graphics, and who does the work. A single label from a freelancer can cost a few hundred dollars, while a full packaging system from an agency can cost tens of thousands. This guide breaks down real price ranges for 2027, what you get at each level and how to plan a packaging project that sells.

I am Jakaria Mahmud, a brand identity and packaging designer who has worked with 80+ clients across 12 countries. My packaging work includes the Le Bouket packaging system with 16 box families and 62 sizes, OCHO Coffee and Nomad Coffee. The prices below are typical market ranges, not quotes, so use them to set a budget and then ask for a fixed price.

Short answer. In 2027 most small brands pay about $300 to $1,500 for one label or simple box design, $2,000 to $8,000 for a small product range, and $10,000 to $50,000 or more for a full packaging system with new structures from an agency. The biggest cost drivers are the number of products, new structures and dielines, 3D mockups, rounds of changes and print ready files. Always ask for a fixed price and confirm that you own every file.

What does packaging design include?

Packaging design is the work of planning, shaping and decorating the box, bag, label or container your product comes in. It has two parts that are often priced separately.

  • Structural design decides the shape, size, opening, inserts and material. The output is a dieline, the flat technical drawing your printer cuts and folds.
  • Graphic design puts your brand on that structure: logo, colour, typography, patterns, product information, barcodes and legal text.

A good packaging project also includes 3D mockups before printing and print ready source files. If a quote does not mention dielines, mockups or files, ask, because those are where hidden costs usually appear.

Packaging design prices in 2027 by project type

ProjectTypical priceWhat is usually included
One label or sticker$300 to $1,500Label artwork on your printer's template, two rounds of changes, print file
One box or bag on a standard dieline$800 to $3,000Graphics on an existing structure, 3D mockup, print ready file
Small range, 3 to 6 products$2,000 to $8,000One system applied to every product, variant colours, mockups and files
Custom structure and dieline$1,500 to $6,000 per structureNew shape, sizes and inserts, dieline, prototype support
Full packaging system$10,000 to $50,000+Strategy, structures, graphics for a full range, guidelines and production support

Freelancers usually sit at the lower end, small studios in the middle and agencies at the top. A brand identity is a separate cost if you do not have one yet. Read what is in a brand identity design package to see what to expect.

What drives the cost of packaging design?

Le Bouket Carrier with Lid range drawn to scale: five sizes from 280 to 550 mm tall with volumes
Every extra size adds drawing, checking and artwork time. Here five carrier sizes are drawn to the same scale.

1. The number of products and sizes

Each product, flavour or size needs its own artwork and file. Ten sizes of one box is far more work than one box, even when the design looks the same.

2. New structures or standard ones

Using a printer's standard box is cheaper. A new shape, a window, an insert or a special opening needs structural design, a dieline and often a prototype.

3. Brand identity readiness

If you already have a logo, colours and type, the designer can start on the packaging. If not, the brand has to be designed first, which adds time and cost.

4. Mockups and photography

Realistic 3D mockups help you approve the design and sell before printing. Product photography is extra and usually priced separately.

5. Rounds of changes and the number of decision makers

Two clear rounds keep the price fixed. Open ended changes and many people approving are the most common reasons budgets grow.

6. Print and production support

Preparing files for a specific printer, checking proofs and adjusting for materials such as kraft, foil or embossing all take time and should be in the quote.

Structural vs graphic packaging design

Many brands only need graphic design on a proven box. Structural design is worth paying for when your product has an unusual shape, needs protection, or when the opening moment is part of the experience, as it often is for premium and gift products.

Packaging design example: the Le Bouket packaging system

Le Bouket is a luxury floral and lifestyle boutique that sells bouquets, bespoke arrangements, candles and vases. Before any graphics, the client and the manufacturer needed one clear reference for every box. I built a Packaging Dimensions book with 16 packaging families and 62 sizes, from carriers with lids and long boxes to hat boxes and puck boxes with solid or clear lids.

Le Bouket Carrier with Lid Size S: 2D front and top view with 280 mm top, 160 mm base and a 3D view
Each size gets a 2D front and top view, measurements in millimetres, a volume and a 3D view.

Each family opens with a range page that draws every size side by side at the same scale, and each size has its own spread with measurements and a 3D view. That saved the client from costly guesswork with the manufacturer and made the next step, the packaging graphics, faster and cheaper.

Le Bouket Rigid Puck Box range: 400, 500 and 600 mm round boxes with lift off lids
Rigid puck boxes in three sizes, drawn to scale with a 3D lineup.

How a packaging design project works, step by step

  1. Brief. Products, sizes, where they are sold, competitors, budget and printer. A clear brief is the cheapest way to save money. Use this design brief guide as a starting point.
  2. Structure. Choose standard boxes or design new ones, then confirm sizes and dielines with your printer.
  3. Concepts. One or two design directions on your key product.
  4. Refinement. Choose a direction and refine it in two clear rounds.
  5. Roll out. Apply the system to every product, size and variant.
  6. Mockups. 3D mockups to approve the design and use for pre sales and your website.
  7. Print files. Print ready artwork on your printer's dielines, plus all source files.

How long does packaging design take?

One label or box usually takes one to three weeks. A small range takes three to six weeks. A full system with new structures can take two to three months, plus printing and prototype time. Printers often need two to six weeks after files are approved, so plan launches backwards from your sale date.

Packaging design costs in the USA, UK, Australia and Norway

Prices follow local studio rates. In the USA and Norway, agency packaging projects are often at the top of the ranges above. In the UK and Australia, small studios commonly price a small range in the middle of the range. Working with an independent designer who serves clients worldwide can give you agency level work at a lower fixed price, with files ready for printers in your own country. I work with brands in the USA, the UK, Australia and Norway.

How to get more from your packaging design budget

  • Start with your best selling product, then roll the system out to the rest.
  • Use standard box structures unless the shape is part of the product.
  • Fix your brand identity first so the packaging does not change twice.
  • Ask your printer for dielines before design starts.
  • Agree on two rounds of changes and one decision maker.
  • Make sure you own the final files and the full rights.

Common packaging design mistakes that cost money

  • Designing before sizes are confirmed, then redrawing every file.
  • Choosing the cheapest quote that does not include print files or mockups.
  • Too much text on the front, so buyers cannot see what the product is in a second.
  • Ignoring how the packaging looks in a small online thumbnail.
  • Not testing a printed prototype before ordering thousands of boxes.

What packaging design costs with me

I price every packaging project as a fixed price after a free call. A full packaging range with brand identity, guidelines, website and launch assets sits in the $1,999 per month Partner plan. If you only need a logo, a brand starter kit and a landing page first, the Launch plan is $799 one time. The Growth plan at $3,999 per month adds sales systems, lead generation and advanced SEO. You own every file and the full rights. See packaging design services and the full plans.

The takeaway

Packaging design cost is driven by the number of products, new structures, mockups, changes and print files. Set a budget from the ranges above, confirm sizes and dielines early, start with one hero product and ask for a fixed price that includes every file. Good packaging pays for itself on the shelf and online.

Frequently asked questions

In 2027 one label or simple box usually costs about $300 to $1,500, a small range of 3 to 6 products about $2,000 to $8,000, and a full packaging system with new structures from an agency $10,000 to $50,000 or more. The number of products, new structures, mockups, changes and print files drive the price.

Freelance packaging designers often charge about $40 to $150 per hour and agencies $150 to $250 or more. Fixed price projects are usually safer, because you know the full cost before work starts.

A dieline is the flat technical drawing of a box or label that shows cut lines, fold lines, glue areas and bleed. The printer uses it to cut and fold the packaging, and the designer places the artwork on it.

One label or box usually takes one to three weeks, a small range three to six weeks, and a full system with new structures two to three months, plus two to six weeks for printing.

It is worth it when your product has an unusual shape, needs protection or is sold as a premium gift where the opening moment matters. For most simple products, graphics on a proven standard box are enough.

Yes, ideally. Packaging uses your logo, colours and typography, so fixing the brand identity first means the packaging does not need to change again later.
